Changing Neighborhoods

Exploring the Dynamics of Gentrification

In this section, we will explore the major actors, causes, and effects of gentrification.  We will come to understand what gentrification looks like, and be able to predict where it might go.  It is organized into four major sections that I believe will help the reader best understand the process.  Feel free to revisit them as you wish and navigate around the site using the tabs at the top of the page, or by reading through each page in the order I think is best by clicking on the links at the bottom of each page - which will take you to the next reading.

In the first section, I'll explain how we have to think about cities and neighborhoods in regards to gentrification, and introduce the major stakeholders in the process.  You can view this section here.

Next, we'll explore how the changing American economy has helped to spur a back-to-the-city movement which is one of the root causes of gentrification. You can view this section here.

After, we will look at how gentrification gets started and how the process unfolds.  In this section, we will come to understand the path that gentrification takes through cities, and how demand for certain types of living and housing plays a role in driving the process.  You can view this section here.

Finally, we will look at how real estate investors and city planners play a role in gentrification, and try to dispel some widely held notions of these actors so we can more clearly understand our changing cities.  You can view this section here.

First, we'll try to come to make sense of city neighborhoods - the very places where gentrification rears its head.  Click on the button below to read on.
